CONGRATULATIONS to all the winners of
the 3rd Province-wide
News Writing Competition organized by UNO-R English and Mass Communications
Department of the College of Arts and Sciences with Tolentine Star and Tolentine
Herald held last February 15, 2014 (Saturday) from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the High School Activity
and Cultural Center (HSACC).
Out
of fifty-one (51) Pre-Registrants, forty-three (43) came to join the contest. The
said competition was judged by ABS-CBN News Reporter/Anchor and Mass
Communication Professor Yasmin Pascual-Dormido,
Tolentine Star Editor-in-Chief Ashraf Khater and News Reporter Shiela
Mae Gelera. The judges evaluated the news entries
according to the following criteria: Accuracy and Brevity (Accuracy of
information, brevity, and comprehensiveness of the article), Organization (Prioritization
of details, angling, and content), Style (Writing style and use of transitional
devices), and Grammar (Sentence construction, proper use of words, and
structure).

The
winners received the following cash prizes as follows: First Place – Php 2,000.00; Second Place – Php
1,500.00; Third Place – Php 1,000.00; Fourth Place – 700.00; and Fifth Place –
500.00.
The competition is open to all
public and private school students in Negros Occidental. Winners and

Aiming at developing the writing
skills of young campus writers, this news writing competition aims to: provide opportunities for the
development of skills and talents among high school students in the area of communication particularly in
journalism; provide the young writers of the province a venue to express
themselves and apply their skills; promote the values of truthfulness and
integrity through accurate and responsible journalism; and, enable the faculty and students of
the English and Mass Communications Department to contribute to national
development by sharing their knowledge and expertise to high school students in
the province.
Ms. Yasmin Pascual-Dormido chaired the competition with Mrs. Adelyn D. Sia (English and Mass Communication Department Head) and Mrs. Ivy Gonzales Aboy (Assistant Chair).
