battle for Lit-Mus 2014
UNO-Rians
shone and devoured the spotlight as seven competitive colleges competed for the
Literary-Musical 2014 competition. The
contest was divided into Literary-English, Literary-Filipino and Musical events. For
literary events, students had the chance to present their talents and skills in
using the Filipino and English languages in different categories: Impromptu Speaking
(English), Oration, Classical Piece Interpretation, Impromptu Speaking
(Filipino), Talumpati and Binalaybay.
College
of Education’s Raxel Gonzales grabbed the championship title in impromptu speaking
(English). College
of Nursing Allied Health and Sciences’ Clyde Aubrey Rojo and College of
Engineering bet Daniel Pollentes were declared first and second runners-up
respectively. Eagle
Eden Thea Aboso won in the oration followed by Mentor Mary Kimberly Cagape as
second place. Ma. Tiffany Cabigor landed third place. The
College of Arts and Sciences emerged in the classical piece competition with the
character Maleficent performed by Riza Mae Tambis. Hennie
Marie Berja of the College of Criminal Justice Education Criminology won as 1st
runner-up and Christian John Alota of College of Business and Accountancy, 2ndrunner-up. College
of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences won the Impromptu (Filipino). College
of Arts, and Sciences on the other hand was champion in binalaybay and talumpati.
Meanwhile,
powerful voices and graceful danced steps wowed the spectators in the musical
competition. The
musical competition comprises Kundiman, Vocal solo, Vocal duet, MTV live, and
Hip-Hop.
The
College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences conquered Kundiman and Vocal
Duet. College
of Engineering won in Hip-Hop and College Teaser competition. Artians’
championed the MTV-Live in their “Run the World” act. For
the Vocal solo, College of Bussiness and Accountancy made it to the top while
College of Information Technology declared as winner in the MTV-Taped.
The
winners will represent the school in the upcoming Negros Occidental Private
Schools Sports Cultural Educational Association, (NOPSSCEA) this November. / MassCom Class / Charity and Jameson

Review of September 11, 2014 U-Week 2014 Events
Educational Seminars held in U-Week 2014
One hundred and thirty four students
in different secondary schools around the province participated in a short-course
Vocational and Technological Training for Livelihood seminars.
The seminars aim to aid students and
enrich their knowledge in Computer Hardware Servicing, Photoshop and basic
training in welding.
“The seminar is for high school
students in preparation for their vocational technology courses later on, if
they opt to take short term course” said Mariano D. Antenor, Jr. Head of CIT
Department.
“It’s a good way for us students to expand our
knowledge about the topic and to meet also new faces” Melle Christian Dionio of
Sum-ag National High school said.
According to Antenor, it took a month
for them for the preparation of the whole presentation.
Meanwhile,
as part of the College of Information Technology’s thrust in enhancing the
students’ learnings, a seminar on “Game and Web Development” was also held at UNO-R.
The whole day seminar was attended

The seminar focused on how to make a
game application and how to create a website. There were also talks about the
current trend in java script library.
Bobbie Manuel dela Pena, a BSIS-III
student, said that the seminar was really informative and at the same time
useful.
The talk was made possible through
the efforts of the College of information technology student council and With
Intensive Tutorial Sessions (WITS).
On the other hand, to supplement
everyday classroom lectures, the Electronics, Electrical, and Computer
Engineering Department held a one-day seminar on the Low Voltage Application on
Feeder and Branch Circuit at the Fr. Cuenca Hall, September 11.
The topic was discussed by Engineer
Jalssen J. Dumangcas, a Professional Electrical Engineer and a Civil Engineer.
“Whatever things that will be done
in the actual design scenario are supplemented in this seminar which are
normally would not be attained in classroom lectures,” said Engineer Rolando Escalona.
He also added that there are limited
numbers of activities for them, [EECE students] that is why they designed an
activity that will be beneficial to them academically within the university

COM holds concert for a cause
Using their God-given
talents, the Association of Children of Mary Immaculate (COM) staged a musical
play-for-a-cause at the University Little Theatre.
The event was bannered
with the title, ‘For Good’
The play is composed
of different genres of singing and dancing. It shows the variety of trending
dances and songs which entertained so much the audience.
It is aimed to
showcase the talent of the students, to build up camaraderie and to entertain
the students.
Above all, the said
musical play is for the benefits of the adopted community of COM specifically
the Purok Tumpok Primary School and Holy Infant. / MassCom BROJOR Class

crowned Mr. and Ms. UNO-R 2014

colors blue and gold gown created by one of Bacolod’s top fashion designers
Janjan Ditching, 18 year-old second year Bachelor of Science in Medical
Technology student crowned this year’s Miss UNO-R.
Peah Angelica Diamante,
representing College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences also won the UNO-R’s
Choice award.
College of Business and
Accountancy’s bet Riljun Mayagma on the other hand hailed as Mr. UNO-R 2014.
Mayagma, 19, a fourth
year Bachelor of Science in Accountancy also bagged the Mr. Tolentine Missology
award.
Making it to the first runner-up spot are Aldwin John
Hablo and Maria Angela Tanoso both from the High School Department.
Micheal Del Rosario of College of Engineering and Erna
Torreblanca of College of Business and Accountancy were named as second
runners-up.
During
the final interview, the top three finalists for male category were asked “As
member of the Laity, what is your greatest challenge in the new
evangelization?”
Mayagma
said as member of the Laity, “I will help preach and spread the gospel or the
words of God by serving as good example to everyone, having Christ-like
attitude and by possessing the UNO-Rian values of being truthful and devoted to
the service of mankind.”
Diamante
on the other hand said she will go to remote places and spread the good news of
God when asked “How will you start your journey toward a new evangelization.”
The year’s
battle of beauty and wit was witnessed by thousands of UNO-Rians and visitors

U-wide
bloodletting activity held
To help people especially those who are in
need of blood transfusion, a university-wide bloodletting activity was held at the
University of Negros Occidental- Recoletos.
Dr. Nora Rosimar Reyes, a Forensic Medicine
teacher at the UNO-R Criminology Department said a single act of donating blood
means a big help for saving lives.
“The blood donor could also benefit from
donating,” Reyes further said.
The activity is sponsored by the Philippine
Red Cross and Supreme Student Government with volunteer nurses and medical
technology students of the university.

UNO-R
celebrates first UCDO day
The University Community Development Office (UCDO) celebrated its first ever UCDO Day.
Mely Flores, UCDO supervisor
presented the strategies and programs to the participants including
coordinators and student volunteers.
Flores highlighted environmental
stewardship, caritas work, community development services, community research,
value formation and spiritual enhancement, advocacy and networking, data
banking and publishing, and project development.
A symbolic presentation of
Adopt-a-School campaign was also held.
University President Rev.

Discovering
IT through “IT’s in the Mind”
Students
from college, high school and elementary level showcased their skills in computer
programming and software utilization through IT’s in the mind version 8.0.
It’s
a one day event spearheaded by the college of Information Technology.
The
event has five areas namely Paint IT for the elementary students, Present IT
for the high school, and for the college – the Battle of the Logicians, Battle
of the Wits and Scratch.
College
of Information Technology faculty Rogy Acosta said this event will help
unleashing technological skills of the students of the university. MassCom

Falcons
Day in a Week
Falcons showcased their wit and logical skills in a back to back battle sponsored by the College of Information Technology Student Council at the University Auditorium.
IT Sophomores Janine Nobleza
and Reihna Espinosa conquered other year level participants in the Battle of
the Wits.
“We were only informed to
join this contest just last night so we felt that it was kind of instant. We
never expected to win because we weren’t prepared,” said Nobleza after her
unexpected victory.
Battle of the Wits is a
contest of general knowledge basically about Information Technology (IT)
related topics. The Battle of the
Logicians on the other hand, challenges the students’ skills in programming.
IT Seniors Christian Bern
Libo-on and Roberto Sabanal championed the Battle of the Logicians in the Upper
Class while Christian Shane Plaza and John Gabriel Singson in the lower class.
“These annual activities of
Falcons aim to showcase the intellectual skills of the IT students. Also we are
hoping to build camaraderie among the year levels,” CIT governor Christine
Dorias said.
As to extending the Falcon’s
activities to other schools in the city, Dorias said that it would be possible

Among the public and private schools in the province, Negros Occidental High School bagged the title as champion for the City-Wide Social Science Quiz version 3.0 held at the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos.
The quiz was
divided into easy, average and difficult rounds.
NOHS representatives Gene Phillip Levee Ynion
and Ryan Miguel Cornel topped the competition with a total score of 25 out of
60 items.
“We’re very proud to represent our school but
we felt the pressure at the same time. We give the glory to God for this
achievement”, Ynion said.
Cornel on the
other hand, said that they were given books to read and reviewed only
yesterday. “We prayed a lot”, he added.
Mr. Earl
Pabiona, the team’s coach and mentor said Ynion and Cornel were chosen last
year through their Academia Club who aims to review students in advance.
This is the
second time NOHS won the title which made them Quiz Bowl back-to-back champion.
Other winning
schools are Tangub Christian Academy and Mansilingan Agro- Industrial High

BCES
wins 1st Science Whiz Challenge
First-timer Bago City Elementary School (BCES) won the 1st Achievers Quest 2014 Science Whiz Challenge held at the UNO-R auditorium.
BCES representative,
Shanelle P. Mesias, garnered 41 points at the end of the competition. While G.
Lopez Jaena Elementary School and Bacolod Evangelical Church Learning Center
tied with a score of 39.
After a sudden death-round,
G. Lopez Jaena Elementary School representative, Keithly N. Mangga bagged the 1st
place, leaving John Joseph Natividad of Bacolod Evangelical Church Learning
Center in the 2nd place.

UNO-R:
Computer for Literacy and Earth Stewardship
UNO-R is donating ten fully functional computers to Luis Hervias National High School.
This is UNO-R’s way of reliving its commitment to nation-building
by promoting relevant education on Stewardship.
This project specifically aims to:
1.) Enhance
computer education programs of the beneficiary schools so that they are able to
equip their students with computer skills.
2.) Raise
the level of environmental awareness among the teachers and students to
encourage them to become environmentally responsible.
The project is initiated by
the University Community Development Office.
After Luis Hervias, the university
plans to donate computers to Negros Occidental National High School. MassCom

Students
to write essay for U-Week
Sixteen students from
different departments and colleges competed for the essay writing contest held
as part of the university week celebration.
Each contestant must write their original essay in
English base on the theme “UNO-R: Journeying towards a New Evangelization in
the year of the Laity”.
Entries must be a work of
prose, from 500 to 1000 words in length. They are given 1 hour and 30 minutes
to write their essays.
The top three winners will
be announced during the Awarding Ceremony on September 13, 2014, 3:00 pm in the
University Amphitheater. They will
receive Certificate of Recognition and Cash Prizes. MassCom

G for ga-iskwela, W for wala absent, A for aktibo sa school, P for pasado ang grado and O for O-lways smiling. These are the qualities a Mr. Gwapo contestant must have according to Engr. Christopher Taclobos, Dean College of Engineering.
The Engineering department
once again held its very own pageant, Mr. Gwapo 2014 version 2.0 at the
engineering lobby.
This time around the
audience and judges were not entertained with the contestants’ beauty and
brains but with fun and laughter.
The contestants showcased
skills in production number, talent portion and the informal wear competition.
According to CEN governor
Ryan Villaruel, “Nabitin ang mga contestants” which was also one of the reasons
why there was a part two to their pageant.

U-Week 2014 significantly opens
Festive drumbeats, enjoining sounds
of lyres and colorful movements of batons and flags commence this year’s
University Week celebration of the University of Negros Occidental – Recoletos.
Eight schools from the province
representing each college and department of the university battled in an early
morning competition.
Luisa Medel National High School
bagged the championship title. It was sponsored by the College of Arts and
Sciences.
Tabao National High School and Don
Hilario Gonzaga Memorial High School placed second and third runners-up
respectively.
Competing Drum and Bugle groups
stunned thousands of UNO-Rians and visitors.
Significantly, September 8 is also
the feast of Virgin Mary. In an opening prayer led by Rev. Fr. Cornelio Moral,
OAR, Vice President for Religious Affairs and the chairman of U-Week ExeCom, he
greeted Mama Mary by saying, “Good morning and happy birthday Mama Mary.”
Meanwhile, the university imparts to
the Bacolodnons the celebration through a city-wide motorcade.
The
rain never stopped the whole UNO-R community in celebrating this year’s U-Week.
Employees, faculties, students
together with the candidates for Mister and Miss UNO-R 2014, paraded with
charming and engaging smiles.
People hearing the drum beats
excitedly took time to witness the motorcade which made some of them to wave
