Since
its first participation in the Miss Universe Pageant in 1952, the Philippines had
so far produced two Miss Universe titles—Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Margie Moran
in 1973. The country was close to winning the third Miss Universe crown with
the first runner-up placements of Miriam Quiambao in 1999 and Janine Tugonon in
2012.
The
recent consecutive placements of the Philippines in the Miss Universe beginning
with Venus Raj, Miss Universe 2010 fourth runner-up, Shamcey Supsup, Miss
Universe 2011 third runner-up and Janine Tugonon, Miss Universe 2012
first runner-up sparked a new inspiration and optimism to finally bring
home the country’s 3rd Miss Universe crown.
Let’s
look at closely our two confidently beautiful Miss Universe winners.
Gloria Diaz won the first Miss Universe crown for
the Philippines in Miami Beach, Florida. Also around that period, Neil
Armstrong took the first ever human step on the moon.
Gloria Maria Aspillera Diaz (born March 10, 1950) is the first Filipina to bring home the Miss Universe crown. She was approached by an individual who believed she would do well in the Miss Universe competition and groomed the young woman. Díaz was only 18 when she became Miss Universe in 1969 after outsmarting other candidates on the question on how to welcome the first men that had just landed on the moon — Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins — as soon as they were back on the planet.

She was
crowned in the international American-owned pageant in 1969 in Florida, U.S.
after their footage was set on the Statue of Liberty in New York.

Maria Margarita Morán Róxas-Floirendo won the Miss
Philippines and Miss Universe crowns in 1973. A granddaughter of former
Philippine President Manuel Roxas, she has also been known as Margie Morán
Róxas and Margie Moran Róxas De Floirendo. The
full-time college student at Maryknoll College (now Miriam College) and
part-time Auggie Cordero model won the right to represent the country in the
Miss Universe pageant after winning the Miss Philippines competition. Moran
said that she entered the contest because of the incessant urgings of friends
and family. The 19-year-old, 5 ft 6 in beauty was one of the favorites during
that edition, also garnering the Miss Photogenic title.
